At Ayr the stalls are normally on the stands rails and this means those drawn high can run down this side. IN large fiels low drawn horses often have to run on their own down the far rail or waste a lot of ground coming across to the stands rail. So it was for Star Cracker who ran here 14 days ago over 6f. He ran really well and was up there until 1f out. Finishing 4th he would have been a lot nearer and as he has won here over 5f on Good to Soft I take him to be able to beat these reproducing that effort. He has Danny Tudhope on board who has a good record at the track and Jim Goldie is a wiley old fox. Not a great price at 7/4 so if you can get better take it.

This is the other 5f contest and of course I’m looking to the high drawn horses to provide the winner. The current favourite is drawn 2 and in an 8 runner field might be able to track across and have little inconvenience however Landing Night will have some advantage in stall 10. He has to make up 1.5l on Economic Crisis from his latest run at Musselburgh which ~I think he can do because he was far too keen that day and did too much too soon. P J McDonald is in the saddle replacing an apprentice and can give the horses a nice mid division come late ride.

One of the most confusing things about Carlisle is that it is said to be a front runners course. This is true for 5f and 1m races where the course is ranked 6/31 and 2/25 respectively. However over 6f and 7f the opposite is true and hold up horses are favoured. So it is that I am choosing a 1m race today and my favourite front running jockey Joe Fanning. Jacob Black won over severn furlongs at Musselburgh last time readily and like to either lead or be prominent. He has the pace to make all and with Captain Revelation the only other horse in the field who might make it he may even get a cheap lead which will be really difficult for the others to make up in the last two stiff up hill furlongs.

At the predicted 4/1 odds he will be our Back to Lay for the day!! He can certainly get down to 1/2 his odds and has a very good chance of winning.
