BACKING a horse to then LAY it in running or before the race can be a very PROFITABLE strategy.

NAP OF THE DAY

The NAP OF THE DAY runs at Southwell in the 6.00.

THUNDER BUDDY

Has had two C&D wins and one place from 3 runs at Southwell. LTO application of headgear brought out improvement and he doesn’t need to do much more under a 4lb penalty to win this.

Clifford Lee and Karl Burke make a good team and this is exactly the sort of horse, race and situation they shine at.

BACK TO LAY:
The Back to Lay runs at Kempton in the 3.15.

COUNT CALABASH

As you’ll know I rarely stray, on my back to lays, away from sprints but the selection is such a front runner that I have to go for him.

Trained by the lovely Eve Johnson-Houghton and ridden by the above average Charles Bishop this horse has done really well for the stable with 6 victories from 16 runs. LTO he won very easily from the front and will give it another good BASH today.

Surprised that he is at the top of the market as he must be a bit vulnerable of his current mark but still money to be made on the back to lay.

The chart shows he has traded below his BSP on all his last 13 runs.

Advice: Back to Lay looking for 33% – 50% profit (but remember no lead = cash out)

FALSE FAVOURITE & PLACE VALUE

FALSE FAVOURITE:

AUXERRE  Doncaster 3.35 (The Lincoln)

Had a good first season last year with 3 straight wins. He has been given a mark of 100 which might prove lenient. However he has only had 4 runs in his life and will be in the thick of a 22 runner Lincoln Handicap on his handicap debut.

There are two risks to this horse – one is lack of experience and temperament will take over and two the improvement you would expect is not enough to win this.

ALSO favourites don’t have a great record with only 9 winning in the 53 runnings since 1965.

A LAY BET at 3/1.

PLACE VALUE:

ARBALET   Doncaster 1.50

Not a totally confident shout but has the ability to win this.
At 1.9 for a top 4 finish is pretty attractive.
He has been off 216 days so this is the downside.
