Ryan Moore Blog – August 4th

Here is the Ryan Moore blog – August 4th where he gives his view on his chances at Goodwood this afternoon:

Ryan Moore Blog – August 4th (Betfair)

13:50 – Boy in the Bar (15/2 Betfair)
He beat only one home at York last time but he has been dropped 3lb for it, which is fair enough, and he has claims on his earlier, better efforts. He is also a course-and-distance winner who acts well on fast ground, so he is one of many in with a chance.
14:25 – Melting Dew (5/1 Betfair)
He has a really good attitude, and he responded in really game fashion for to beat Alfarris at Sandown last time after looking beaten. The form has obviously worked out well, with the runner-up winning here on Tuesday and a 4lb rise looks fine in that context. That Sandown win came over 1m2f and he steps up to 1m6f for the first time here, but he gets 1m4f well and the trip is well worth trying. First-time cheek pieces will hopefully help him, too.
15:00 – Sun Maiden (9/4 Betfair)
This race attracted only six entries at the five-day stage, and another two have fallen by the wayside at the overnight stage, but that suits me fine. Sun Maiden may not be able to boost the form of Dee Ex Bee, and there are two other nice sorts in here, but she did well for an inexperienced filly having just her third start when placed in the Ribblesdale, where she had a subsequent Grade 1 winner in Athena immediately behind her. She strikes as the sort to continue to progress with her racing, and Goodwood wins run in the family. I think she has a very decent chance.
15:40 – Spring Loaded (7/1 Betfair)
It’s never a bad thing to get on a favourite in a big handicap, and a horse that comes here after a career-best win, too. He was very impressive at Ascot last time, but the downside is that he carries a 6lb penalty here and that win came over 5f. The 6lb penalty doesn’t overly-concern me, as he is actually still 1lb well-in, but I just wonder whether he is more effective at the minimum trip. But I am nit-picking, as he does have some excellent big-field 6f form, too, and of course he has a leading chance.
16:15 – Fox Power (7/2 Betfair)
Richard’s two-year-olds have been going well this week, and the stable as a whole has, and this Dark Angel colt must have looked the part to fetch 450,000gns last October. Other than that, I don’t know anything, as it stands.
16:50 – Restive Spirit (5/2 Betfair)
He was obviously impressive over a mile at Ripon last time but it is his earlier run over this trip at Newmarket that stands out. That second to Naval Intelligence reads very well now. I know the winner would have improved massively to win a Listed race next time, but the third also ran well in defeat afterwards and the fourth has come out and won, too. The handicapper certainly hasn’t missed him on a mark of 93 but he is a lightly-raced and well-bred colt, out of a Cheveley Park winner, and it is easy enough to see him going well.
