#TOTD – GOODWOOD TIPS – 1st June 2018

ROYAL MELODY – Am Riders Hcp, 18.10

The opener at Goodwood is one of those tricky amateur events where on the surface as it is a handicap all the horses should have some kind of chance. However my experience tells me to focus on the jockey not the horse. Simon Walker and Serena Brotherton are the standout pilots in the field and it often pays to follow them. Royal Melody is Miss Brotherton’s mount and so gets the vote as Bluff Crag has show little recent form. More of a danger might be Oceanus who come here in-form and ridden by the experienced and capable Ross Birkett for his Mum while Pretty Jewel could be in the mix but I would prefer a stronger rider if it comes to a close finish.

UPDATE 2 JUNE, 2018.
Unusually Serena Brotherton went off too fast and tailed off leaving the way open to the stamina proven Pretty Jewel. Her jockey didn’t have to do more than sit there looking around for dangers.

PADDY A – Hcp, 20.15

Good second last time out at Lingfield and knows how to win. Jim Crowley takes the ride and he is only 3lbs higher than when he won at Kempton. Hopeful rather than a confident pick.

MOVE SWIFTLY – Novice Stakes, 20.50

James Doyle and William Haggas have been teaming up recently for a few winners and Move Swiftly is a promising sort that would win this if progressing from his first run – win over 7f at Chelmsford. This Cl5 will hopefully be a stepping stone to much bigger things.
